JCC: The Toledo War 1835-36
Years before The Game, Ohio and Michigan were at each other’s throats about something more meaningful than football, the City of Toledo. In 1835, the Territory of Michigan applied for statehood, but an issue was quickly discovered. A mapping error had caused both the territory and the already established state of Ohio to both claim possession of a strip of land that included the highly important port town of Toledo. Neither side was willing to give up their claim, and tensions rose as it prevented Michigan’s attempt at statehood. With local militias on both sides gathering in the city, this Joint Crisis Committee’s goal is for delegations from both states to attempt to create a proper solution to the issue before any blood is spilled, while also bringing glory to their respective states. Whether you side with Michigan or Ohio, prepare to experience likely the only MUN committee where Toledo will play a major role.
About the Crisis Director
Hello! My name is Noah Belles, and I am a senior here at Ohio State. I am a history major who also has an international relations minor. While I have volunteered at OSUMUN before, this is my first time acting as a Crisis Director for a committee, and I am very excited! I really enjoy both 19th-century American history and local history which inspired the idea behind this committee. I’m looking forward to all of the crazy and unique ideas that delegates will come up with throughout this committee!
