1953 USSR: The Death of Stalin

image.png
Stalin is dead. But who will succeed him? That is the question put forth to delegates who choose to try their hand at winning (or influencing) the power struggle in the USSR. There are many major factions vying for power, from those who hold Stalinist “party unity” ideals, to those who prefer a “party democracy” where internal dissent is permitted, to even those who would allow for a somewhat democratic system. Many competing interests, objectives, and ideas will permeate the very fabric of crucial Soviet organizations such as the politburo, the army, and more. Some will vie for ultimate power, while others will be content with influence or other favors. Delegates should prepare to form alliances, break alliances, betray others, and be betrayed themselves. Do you take the high road, trying to gain power through friendship? Or is the power of friendship not enough for you? If you play your cards right, you might just become one of the most powerful humans in world history… if you do.

About the Crisis Director

Hi! My name is Connor Kleinman, and I’m from the distant land of Lower Merion (a suburb of Philadelphia), Pennsylvania. I started MUN my 8th grade year of middle school. I remember a conference in Boston where we were in a hotel room and discovered that COVID-19 had arrived on the east coast the same day… in Boston. I’ve travelled to many cities and college campuses on the east coast for MUN, most recently UNCMUNC with our own MUN team. I’m majoring in Political Science, with minors in Public Affairs and History. I enjoy playing frisbee, going to sports events, and trying new foods. The committee is about the death of Stalin, and the struggle to achieve greater or even total power of many influential party members, generals, political leaders, and intellectuals. Some of you will go for “the crown”. Many of you will fail. But why not fail trying? Personally I’m a crisis enthusiast. I love getting into character, and of course the idea of potentially assassinating my enemies or changing the course of history is an added bonus.
